GETTING HERE

The Silver Star Hut is located just 18 miles from downtown Durango. In the summer, the cabin is a scenic 20-minute drive on a 2WD road. In the winter, the final two miles of the road are closed to cars, making it our favorite time of the year. The ski-in is family-friendly, follows the river bottom and climbs only gradually. To get to La Plata Canyon, drive west out of Durango on U.S. Hwy. 160. Turn right on County Road 124 after 10 miles and proceed north through the burg of Mayday and into the La Plata Mountains.

WHAT TO

BRING

-Sleeping bags (beds have sheets and light blankets)

-Your favorite pillow case

-Food and libations

-A good first aid kit

-A pair of indoor shoes or slippers

-Headlamps or flashlights

-Skis and sleds in the winter; bikes and hiking boots in the summer

-Avalanche safety gear

-A really good read

WHAT TO LEAVE AT HOME

-Hair dryers, curling irons, coffee pots and other power hungry plug-ins
-Cigarettes

-Electronic devices (they don't really work here)

-The 9-to-5 and any day-to-day stresses

WHAT'S ALREADY HERE

-New beds with clean sheets and pillows

-Pots, pans, plates, glasses, silverware, etc.

-A French press and a coffee cone and filters (no grinder)

-Firewood and flame

-Propane range and oven

-Cleaning supplies, toilet paper and garbage bags

-A giant empty cooler

-Foosball table and darts
