ABOUT THE

SILVER STAR

The Silver Star Hut is a 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom cabin located in the heart of La Plata Canyon. The Silver Star is off the grid and energy self-sufficient. The cabin is wrapped by redwood decks, has running water and a flush toilet. In the summer, the hut is a short 30 minute drive from downtown Durango. After the snow flies, a moderate 2 mile ski/sled/snowshoe leads to the cabin.

HISTORY

Will, Rachael and Skyler Sands happened upon the hut in serious distress during the winter of 2010. The Sands devoted 18 months to giving her a serious facelift, rehabilitating the property and putting their personal stamp on the unique home.

In 2014, the Blair family (Rob, Pat, Kurt and Katrina) purchased the hut with the goal of creating a sanctuary for backcountry living and recreation

ETHIC

The Silver Star is an "earth ship" and much of the structure is a dome located literally inside the La Platas. What this means is constant indoor temperatures in the winter and summer. In addition, the hut is located off the grid, serviced by its own well and draws no external energy. The cabin reflects our abiding commitment to and love for the local backcountry.
